Chanel Spring 2012 - The Shoes

For some reason, every Chanel show, for me it's always about the shoes. Not that the clothes aren't amazing and the show yesterday was easily that. But the shoes, or in this case, the boots, grabbed my attention and won't let go. There were 3 styles and I'd be a happy girl to have any. The Beatle style boot has been on the rise in the shoe world and  if they went down the Chanel runway, then they are here to stay, at least for another season.  Hooray for chic, low heeled comfort.

Chanel N°19 Poudré

Chanel's No 19 can truly be called an iconic scent. It's been awhile since I smelled it but I, like so many perfume fanatics, was really anticipating the new Chanel No 19 Poudre.  The original is of course still very much available and now there is  an updated version, something more modern I guess you could say, and very different from the  first one which is a big scent in all aspects of the word  and bold. With the new one,   Creator Jacques Polge says he " wanted to underline the importance of iris at Chanel while giving a new facet to No 19.

No 19 Poudre is based on the iris note ( as is the original),  iris pallida to be exact here, which happens to be a favorite  note of mine. It starts off all rooty iris and green just the way I like it. The top notes of neroli and mandarin are there but not strong to my nose. The iris is so very much there right at the beginning  and stays throughout, albeit much lighter as it goes on.

As it begins to dry into the middle , No 19 Poudre softens and  becomes more floral  and a hint of powder comes in. Despite the name Poudre, this is not a powder fragrance. It has touches here and there but no  big powder presence which is fine by me. The powder comes from light white musks. By the full drydown the fragrance is very soft and light actually but still retains a green-ness. It stays closer to the skin than expected and also doesn't quite last as long as I would like, or like a Chanel usually does.  Despite that, I quite like it.  It's  a pretty perfume and  easy to wear .  Do I wish it lasted longer ? Very much. To many who adore the original, I know they haven't been thrilled. I like  and respect the original but do not love it ( my fav of the No 's =22 ). Perhaps that helps in how I feel about No 19 Poudre.

Chanel Illusion D'Ombre Eyeshadow

Illusion D'Ombre is new type of shadow from Chanel. It's a cream to powder basically ,but it's not quite basic.

The texture in the pot is almost spongy and the shadow is very creamy. It blends really well on the eye and dries down fast.  The packaging says "Long Wear" and I have to say it wore  pretty well on me (using a base) and cream shadows rarely do. So if it wore  ok on me, then most of you will find it wears really well.

On the eye it's very shimmery, which I happen to love. The shade Emerveille shown at top is a light peach and really opens and brighten the eyes.

Illusoire is a deep purple which shows in the photo of the product but the swatch looks more smoky . The color in the pot is the color that ends up on eyes. It's more purple/plum than smoky  and goes on deep but not goth dark.
Silly thing, but I  love the little brush that comes with it. The brush works fine with the shadow , but I find using my fingers still works best for me.  I love the brush mainly because it's cute and small and says Chanel.

This is the shadow that was debuted at the brands Fall/Winter show in February. The model shown, who looks amazing, is wearing the charcoal shade I beleive.

On counters now  at Chanel in six shades.  $ 36.00

Chanel Peridot Nail Lacquer

Chanel Peridot has been getting all the nail buzz for months. I know I've been waiting to try it and now that I have -I can say it is all that  . It's  beautiful nail polish that flashes green and  gold  and is highly metallic.

The formula is a bit thick but it still goes on well.  Image is 2 coats over base coat, no top coat.   As I said it flashes green and gold and I get plenty of green in certain lights , bright light seems to make it more molten gold.   I did use flash in the top picture  and that one shows the green side more.  But the flash image of the bottle is all gold . Non -flash image shows some of the green.  Definitely a duochrome shade here.

Peridot will make a great fall color but I am wearing it now.  The shade is  good for summer as well and will make a fabulous pedi shade. It begs to be shown off in sandals.

On counters now. $ 25.00

My Summer Staples

Summer brings it's own special makeup , skincare and accessories. With my oily , perspiring skin, nothing heavy will do  and I like to get a bronzed glow on.   I  also love big bracelets as opposed to necklaces that sit on a warm neck this time of year.

Here are some of my every day staples of summer. Links lead back to my original review if there was one.

Havaianas- I used to think what's all the fuss about these flip flops? Then I got a pair. Now I have 4 and feel like I need many more. Far more sturdier than most and  very comfortable .

Guerlain Terracotta LipGloss- They release these in summer for a reason, they're totally right for the season. Usually they have SPF , unfortunately this time they don't. But the new bright coral shade is sheer and juicy,  and really not overly bright.  Perfect for a  pop of color. Still using last  year's more neutral bronze shade as well.  Doesn't hurt either that the packaging is so hot.

Dusting Powder- I live for dusting powder when it's hot. They refresh, cool and add light scent. Right now I am loving Caswell Massey's Lilac and Honeysuckle scents and Penhaligon's Violetta ( when do you ever see violet powder ? I've hoarded my tin for years now).

Citrus Fragrances- As much as I love fragrance, when it's really hot I can't do the heavier scents. I adore citrus always  but especially in summer. There are too many to show all of here, but Dior Escale a Pondicherry and Acqua Di Parma Arancia di Capri are two tops favs. Lancome's new O d'Azur  and Annick Goutal's Eau de Hadrien and Ninfeo Mio are  others that get a lot of use.

MAC Paint Pots- Cream shadow rarely  if ever lasts on me  but Paint Pots really work well. Better than powders often.  They are easy  and look great. Favorite  shade is  Indianwood.
Chanel Bronzer- I have two season's past version but they've released  one this year too. What makes this bronzer special is the bands of color. Just a hint of shimmer  and not too dark. You can skip the darkest ones if needed ( I  usually do) and just swipe across the shades that look best on you. I use the bottom ones for a nice light tan look.

Ray Ban Wayfarers- I wore these when they were cool the first time, I wore them when they weren't in style  and I wear them now that they are back again. I've never stopped loving  my Wayfarers and that's that. (  But somehow they got left out of the picture).

Clinique Acne Solutions Foundation- Kept my skin in top shape last summer, helping to hold back the oilies  and acne . It'll be back in the regimen this summer too. No messing with perfection.

Sunscreen (of course)- Hawaiian Tropic  Sheer Touch SPF 50 , this really holds up in water, best I've used for that. Anything with Mexoryl in it. It's the best SPF. Currently finishing my Ambre Solaire from France and have an Ombrelle waiting to be opened. For face- Clarins UV Plus HP  -no moisture, just SPF 40 , mineral and plant based. You never even know it's on. Skinceuticals Physical Fusion SPF 50 is my second fav  for face.

Bangle bracelets- Easy to wear when hot. Less sticking to your skin.  This one is  made of Mango Tree wood .  These are super fun, tribal looking, comfy and inexpensive. I also have a faux Ivory $3 one from H&M years ago that I wear all the time.

Blue Topaz ring- Thankfully I bought good jewelry  back when it was really well priced . This ring came from QVC at least 10 years ago and is Blue Topaz set in sterling. I have another similar one but set in a simple band. These are great for summer as the blue pops with a tan, is a summer color and  they are bold enough  to stand without other jewelry or look great with bangles  .

Phyto Sun HaircareFor the past 2 summers the Phyto Plage Protective Sun Veil spray followed me to the pool. I use after swimming and run it through  my wet hair. It keeps it feeling soft and compensates for the drying and acidic effect of the water. If you have colored hair, it helps hold color in as well.

What are some of your summer staples?  I'd love to hear .

Chanel Fall 2011 Fragrance Releases- Jersey and No. 19 Poudre

New fragrances by  Chanel master perfumer Jacques Polge this fall will be Jersey, an addition to the Les Exculsifs line and Chanel No. 19  Poudre, an iris based update of the iconic No 19 ,according to an  interview in Women's Wear Daily.

Now any re-working of a fragrance as vaunted and beautiful as No. 19 is scary to be honest, but we can be happy that it is in very good hands with Mr. Polge. He is trying to recreate what was done 40 years ago with Iris, artisan wise and trying new things as well.  I look forward to smelling this new creation come this fall.

Chanel Rouge Coco Shine

It's taken me longer than usual to get my hands  on the new Chanel lipstick Rouge Coco Shine, but as of yesterday I finally have one in my happy hands. Last  years's big Chanel release was Rouge Coco lipstick ( now a CEW award finalist) . Rouge Coco Shine is  the new addition.

I like the first Rouge Coco but don't totally love it . It's drier and more satin than I usually like, but the coverage and pigments were wonderful. My favorite Chanel lipstick formula has always been Aqualumiere  and  Rouge Coco Shine seems to merge the best qualities of  both of these. It has the shine and  softness of  my beloved Aqualumiere, and the  rich pigment and  full coverage of Rouge Coco. It's as the saying goes- win win.

Rouge Coco Shine is  very hydrating, feeling almost like a balm on my lips  and lasted longer than expected for a more sheer formula ( about 2 hours). And it isn't super sheer, at least not my shade, Unique.  There is plenty of pigment there.

One of the unique aspects of Rouge Coco Shine is the shine- of the lip bullet. When I took the cap off it had a mirror shine and I thought there was a plastic cap covering it. No, that's the actual lipstick. Quite neat.

On counters now and at http://www.chanel.com/ for $ 32.00

Thanks to the folks at Style.com we have a look at the new fall nail lacquer from Chanel. I'd been admiring in the show shots as it flashed green but also grey metallic. In other words, it looked hot. There's a matching , amazing eyeshadow look on the models as well. I've got the full breakdown and more images here.

January Jones in Frederic Fekkai, Chanel and Versace at the Golden Globes

January Jones was a bombshell at the Golden Globes last night. She is really one to watch on the red carpet  anymore  as she's not afraid to take chances or change it up. Her Versace dress in siren red was  daring but not over the top.   I'm still a bit on the fence with it, but there's no doubt  it  was bold. Then there was that hair, worthy of Rita Hayworth. Add in flawless makeup and a strong red lip and you've got the  aforementioned bombshell look.

The details on her hair and makeup ( Makeup by Chanel artist Rachel Goodwin, hair by Frederic Fekkai stylist Renato Campora. )

Hair:

Campora was inspired by the styles of the 1960’s, which he believes is one of the most striking decades for beauty. His look created for January channels old Hollywood glamour, with a modern twist that is full of volume and timeless elegance.

On wet hair, Campora began by applying Fekkai Advanced Full Blown Styling Whip to create volume and Fekkai Coiff™ Contrôle Ironless Straightening Balm to smooth out the hair. He parted the hair to the side and blow dried using a round brush. To create waves, he put hair in hot rollers and let them sit for 10 minutes. Once he took the rollers out, Campora brushed through the hair creating volume and constructing shape for the style. To finish off her look, Renato sprayed Fekkai Coiff™ Sheer Hold Hairspray for all night hold.

Makeup :

"I prepped her skin with Chanel Sublimage Concentrate. I then sculpted her cheeks with Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base. On her lids, I used a wash of champagne coloured shadow, Chanel Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Liberty. I created a strong, bold defined brow with the Chanel Perfect Brows palette, and applied two coats of Chanel Inimitable Intense Mascara in Noir.

Finally, I knew I wanted to go for a glossy red lip as opposed to a matte red, to keep the look fresh and not too retro. I used an amazing red gloss, Chanel Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss in Excess, to complete January’s strong red carpet look.”

Michelle Williams debuts new Chanel foundation at Golden Globes

I love Michelle Williams makeup here and she does the pixie do so well. Better that we can't see her dress because it doesn't come off quite as well. It was pretty but needed to be fitted more in the bodice. It's all forgiven for that gorgeous coral lip and peach cheeks. One of the highlights of Chanel's Spring line on counters now is blush in Espeigle used here.

Another of the products used by makeup artist Jeanine Lobell ( founder of Stila ) was a new Chanel foundation called  Vitalumiere Aqua in B10 .  This is out in March.

Jeanine's full look for Michelle :

“As a base, I used a new foundation from Chanel, Vitalumiere Aqua in B10 . It’s a super light, sheer formula with great coverage.

On Michelle’s cheeks, I used Chanel Powder Blush in Espiegle, a beautiful shimmery pink-coral .

Her eyes were Kevyn Aucoin Essential Eye Shadow Palette #2, and applied two coats of Kevyn Aucoin Lash Curler Volume Mascara. I set her brows with Chanel Perfect Brows.

Finally, on her lips I used Chanel Rouge Coco Lip Colour in Chalys.”

Best of Beauty 2010

It's time for the best of the year , a look back at my top favorites. It's not always easy to slim the list down as I like so many products. But these that follow were the tops, or at least the ones that came immediately to mind. Most were reviewed here before so a link is there if you wish to read the original post. Please share your "best of" for the year in the comments. I'd love to know what's on everyones list.

Dior J'Adore L'Or- Full review coming soon on this as I only tried it at Christmastime.  An updating of the original J'Adore with a focus on purer , high grade essences and rose absolute and jasmine from Dior's own fields, this powerhouse white floral is beyond beautiful. So well done, and a bit more of an oil than as it's an essence of perfume rather than a  straight EDP.

Annick Goutal Ninfeo Mio- Another hit from the great house. Love at first sniff and few others came close to it all year. It's not like anything else out there and for Spring and Summer weather,  so beautiful, fresh and  green.

Clinique Acne Solutions  Liquid Makeup - Kept my skin in check all summer, the hottest on record here. Not as matte as I usually use but it worked so well at keeping acne  down and helped oilies as well, while also providing great coverage and good looking skin.

Clinique All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage- A genius idea. Cools, soothes , brightens and de-puffs all at once. Not it is not quite a miracle worker, you don't suddenly lose all puffiness etc.,  but it does make a difference and feels so good on. Anytime your eyes are tired or irritated , reach for this.

Dior Rouge Dior Haute Couleur Lipsticks- There were a lot of fabulous new lipsticks this fall, one from most major brands. I liked or loved  most , but the best to me was the new Dior. It feels like air on your lips but packs pigment and moisture and simply looks like lipstick should.

Ellis Faas Makeup - Everything in this new  this year line but especially the Eye Lights metallic eye shadows.  With innovative colorways and packaging,  this became a huge favorite.

Origins Zero Oil Cleanser- Most amazing oily skin cleanser ever. Yes ,really. Did wonders for my skin in the super hot summer heat. Kept using all fall and into winter  even. Not harsh but cleanses well and helps bat down that pesky over oiliness. Zero Oil indeed. Maybe not all of it, but enough.

Chanel Les Khakis nail polish- The polish everyone at Fashion Week in Sept. 2010 was either talking about, wanting or wearing. I got more compliments on my Khaki Vert toes than I ever expected. I also didn't expect the  polish to look so good, but somehow it was perfect. The two other shades didn't move me as much but I still like them.

Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger - This new line  grabbed a lot of reader attention and deservedly so . Deeply repairing for damaged and very dry hair, it's that good.

MAC Venomous Villains- One of the most hotly anticipated collections of the year . This was simply fun but also had some great colors. I know people who wanted it simply because it was Disney, but most of us I think wanted it because it was Disney and MAC.  The decals/logos were well done and I love having at least one lippie sitting out where I can see it.

Honorable mentions go to :
 1. Clarins Extra Firming Foundation-  they do know foundation as well as skincare there .  Super coverage, firming, radiance. Hits all the marks.
2. Atelier Perfumes- a new, niche line  of old  style cologne  scents modernized and better.
3. Maybelline Age Rewind The Eraser Foundation - A drugstore foundation that truly competes with the high end lines.

Chanel Poudre Universelle Compacte Pressed Powder in Rose Merveille

Chanel Poudre Universelle Compacte Natural Finish Pressed Powder in Rose Merveille has become my winter bronzer subsitute. I'm too pale for bronzer but want a little color to brighten up( I don't like being pale).

The color in the pan is defintely peach-beige but don't be scared, it just warms up skin. I am pale, although not pasty, and I get just  a hint  of color from this. There is shimmer in there but it's not allover heavy. I  could see a few sparkles here and there but  nothing overdone.

It helps of course that the powder itself is so soft ,smooth and perfecting on your face. It's been a long time since I used a Chanel pressed powder and I had forgotten how nice they are. It's a bit like a soft focus filter.

Part of the Spring  Les Perles Des Chanel collection  on counter in January at $ 44.00 and  LE.

Chanel Bleu de Chanel After Shave for Men

The holidays often bring fragrance shopping for the men as well as the ladies. While looking around the Chanel site awhile back I was thrilled to see the the new  Bleu de Chanel came in a After Shave. Many of the men I know ( and my usual testers) like using after shave and some prefer it over cologne.  The hard part is that few high end brands do after shave. Enter Chanel, and that's a great place to start. ( Hey, men need Chanel too, right ? and it gives us one more excuse to go to the counter).

Bleu de Chanel  is called an after shave lotion, but it's a normal splash type, not any kind of balm.  It's is light but has just enough scent and is very fresh and masculine with a good bit of  citrus, vetiver  and cedar  to my nose.  The Chanel quality  of ingredients is very present  . It quiets on skin about halfway to the drydown, but retains enough scent to be "there" and just right.  My tester really liked it. It's not an earthshatteringly different scent , but one that will be new yet in the realm of comfortable familiarity.

The 100 ml aftershave lotion is $50 . Two sizes of EDT are also available.

Chanel Rouge Allure Extrait De Gloss in Genie

Rouge Allure Extrait De Gloss is Chanel's newest lip offering out last month.  Genie is a favorite . It goes on a light peach , lighter than it looks on the wand. It does lean a bit orange/coral but very little. The color is pigmented but sheer at the same time. Genie makes a nice pop to an otherwise  neutral look and really complements a bronzed face.

This gloss feels super on the lips, soft, and very moisturizing . It's also not overly sticky and lasts well for a gloss type . But then it's not simply a gloss, but a lipstick /gloss hybrid . More gloss than stick but not a typical gloss either (  Is anything Chanel typical? I think not and  am thankful).

On counters now at $ 32.00 in nine shades (One of the  pretty pink shades, Insolence I think,  also shown above.  ).
